I always say that inflammation is the root of all evil.. not money. Studies have shown the imbalances in the body are most often caused by inflammation of some kind, whether it is inflammation in the intestines, muscles, or other organs. There are many reasons that inflammation happens in the body, in fact, studies have shown that simply being overweight can cause chronic inflammation all over the body.
Some experts argue that inflammation is the reason for all disease, while others, like Hippocrates, believe that leaky gut is where all disease begins- for now we will leave it up to the experts to figure out. I personally believe that disease begins in the gut, leads to inflammation, which then causes more issues throughout the body.
But for now, let's talk about acute inflammation, which causes pain in the muscles.
So far, in my 25 years on this earth, I have been injured numerous amounts of times.
I personally have been in four car accidents (none of which were my fault), slipped and fell on black ice twice, 'flew' off a trampoline when I was about eleven, and have had some gym injuries.
All of the above injuries lead to one herniated disk and one bulging disk in my cervical spine, one bulging disk in my thoracic spine, and 2 herniated disks in my lumbar spine. Not to mention I was born with some abnormalities in my spine as well-- yay!
Anyone who has these injuries will tell you that they have their "good" days and they have their "bad" days. I'm happy to report that since I started doing more yoga (I love PiYO), hydrating properly, getting regular chiropractic care & massage, and eating properly I don't have as many flare ups as I used to. I get a flare up maybe once or twice a year.
As it would be, I happen to be going through a "flare up" right now. So far I have been able to use all natural remedies and therapies and have controlled my pain level and inflammation quite well.
Most recently, my neck has gone into quite the flare up. I'm guessing I lifted my massive son wrong, slept wrong, or turned my head the wrong way. I know when I noticed a change, about a week ago, I leaned my head back to give my husband a kiss. I lean my head back all the time, but this was just the right angle and I ended up slipping a disk in my neck.
Slipping the disk in my neck came along with a bunch of scary neurological symptoms. Not only did my neck and shoulders begin to swell, my eye began to twitch and water uncontrollably, my arm went numb, and one side of my face started to lose feeling. I was pretty certain at this point I was having a heart attack or possibly even a stroke. I thought my heart finally kicked the bucket, so to speak.
I made it to my doctor about 45 minutes after I felt the change, where I was advised to see a highly skilled and trained chiropractor. I saw her the same night. She used low force (just an activator) to adjust my neck and also did a lot of stretches to my neck. I also got Cranial Sacral Therapy the next day.
The next week was filled with my doctor & chiropractor calling me daily to see how I was doing, ice packs, bone broth, panaway, and turmeric capsules and smoothies. I did have a bit of an emotional "break" at one point.. I had a "why me?" moment. I think we all go through those feelings, especially when we live far from family and help when we have a rambunctious toddler running around the house!
I'm happy to say that 10 days after the symptoms began, the only symptoms I am having now are tight muscles and some inflammation in my neck & shoulders. I only used natural remedies and therapies this time. In the past, I immediately got pain medication from my doctor, saw my massage therapist, ate some good foods, and slept it off the best I could. I did notice that while my body didn't hurt as badly.. I felt horrible. It would take me a month or so to "feel like myself" again. No energy or anything.. This time it was a completely different experience! I feel energized, I'm sleeping well despite some pain in the middle of the night, and oddly enough my complexion is GLOWING (thank you turmeric!).
