Reasons to ditch the plastic

We live in a world where plastic has seemed to overcome much of what we know. We also live in a world that has excessive pollution, increased cancer risks, and many people live at or below the poverty level. What is one thing you can do to change all of those things? Start using glass instead of plastic!
My husband and I have slowly been converting most of our kitchen from plastic items to glass, wood, cast iron, and metal. Above was when we finally got our gallon glass jugs that we ordered to store our tea in and are getting rid of our old pitchers.

According to TIME magazine, plastic now take up 12% of our trash in comparison to the 1% in 1960; these bottles are taking up space in landfills that could be designated to other waste.

Plastic was meant to last for a long time. While that was thought to be a good idea at the time, it also takes a very long time to decompose. This can lead up to plastic piling up in landfills. Some people recycle their plastic, but sadly most of the plastic that was and is being created isn't recycled or properly reused.

Plastic also poses a risk to health. If you expose your plastic to high levels of heat  (or cold) the chemicals that are in the plastic will begin to be exposed to your food, liquids, or other things you have in the plastic containers. Think about it we microwave our food in plastic containers, use plastic utensils when cooking, and drink out of plastic bottles almost on a daily basis. We are exposing ourselves to a lot more plastic than we realize.

While glass products might be more expensive- they last longer and have many benefits. One of the greatest benefits is that glass can be thoroughly cleaned. Glass isn't permeable like plastic is, therefore food will not stain or be absorbed into the glass.  While more expensive upfront, they can save you money in the long run. Instead of buying a bunch of plastic water bottles every week, you can buy a Brita pitcher for about $15-$20 and then use the filters that you can change every few months for about $10 each. You can refill your glass bottle over and over again for much cheaper than buying a case of water for $5 a pop.

Another reason to ditch plastic and use glass is that glass is multi-functional. It can be re-purposed much easier than plastic can. You can use it in food prep, food storage, in crafts, serving food, drinking out of, using as rain collections, etc. Some people even claim that things stored in glass taste much better. Have you ever bought cheap wine from the plastic (box wine) and then bought cheap wine that is in a glass bottle? Usually the cheap wine in the glass bottle tastes better! Cigar shops usually store their most expensive cigars in glass tubes!

Okay so what if you switch to glass on most things but you can't switch on everything?

I personally am not able to remove all of the plastic from my product line. But I go out of my way to be as safe as possible. I offer people discounts if they return their old containers. The bigger my business gets and the larger my business gets- I will begin to incorporate more glass as containers for the skin care products!

I personally started saving all my glass containers to use at another time. Try buying goods that are in glass jars rather than plastic or metal! You will get more use out of your glass jars!
